![]() It has found generally long payback periods even under the ideal model scenarios. However, Smart Power India has released a report on this mini grid model which it has been supporting. Mini-grids are another alternative, generally ranging from 10kw to 100kw and serving a larger commercial area. Towns and perhaps villages are more likely candidates for grid electrification. The Government of India has plenty of demands on its money, and the high upfront cost of electrifying hamlets coupled with the annual financial obligations to fund operations make hamlet electrification an unlikely priority. Factoring in operating costs, transformer replacements, transmission costs, generation infrastructure costs, and fuel costs, each hamlet would likely never payback the upfront costs of connecting it to the national grid and may not even generate enough revenue to cover the operating costs. To connect a community of 50 households 2 kilometers from the grid would cost a minimum of $10,000, yet evidence suggests that only 10 of the 50 households could afford the $4 a month grid connection, amounting to annual revenue of $450 (less than 1/20 th of the distribution capital costs). Each household costs $300 to connect even without a meter. A transformer costs between $900 and $3,000 depending on quality and capacity. In 2014-2015, the estimated cost of extending an 11KV distribution line 1 kilometer in India was approximately $4,000 and 33KV lines $6,000 per kilometer. The cost of extending the grid is the first hurdle. With that in mind, let us take a closer look at the different types of grids and where they fit into an inclusive electrification strategy. Hamlets can be as small as 20 households but in rare cases are as large as a few hundred, and a large portion of them remain off-grid. The typical household income, as reported by customers to Mera Gao Power, is between $0.25 and $0.50 per person per day depending on the season. Most labor is engaged in agriculture and livestock, and families typically have smaller livestock and land holdings than in villages. Rural hamlets are much smaller, more remote, poorer, and generally deprived of public services. To be considered electrified, only 10% of village residents need to be connected to the grid. However, electricity service to villages is worse than to towns with power often delivered only after 11pm and before 5am and often not at all for weeks. The government’s recent focus for grid expansion has been on villages with the goal of 100% village electrification. Villages are typically 250 households or larger. The balance of the labor force is typically engaged in agriculture and livestock. ![]() Because of the more limited traffic, commerce is usually lower and village shops serve the residents of the village or residents of nearby hamlets. The proximity to the road usually allows residents to travel to towns for work or to start roadside commercial shops. Rural villages are usually alongside or very close to a paved road.Nearly all towns are connected to the national grid though service is poor. A town would typically have more than 1,000 households. Because of the greater commercial activity, incomes and payment capacity are higher. Behind the shops are normally a few rows of houses. The increased traffic leads to more opportunities for commerce resulting in clusters of shops alongside the road in all four directions from the intersection. Rural towns are commonly located at the intersection of paved roads. To better understand where the market for various levels of service lie, it is important to break rural North India down a bit further. But even here, rural off-grid communities are not homogenous. And 200 million people are off-grid in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. No single solution will work best in both the North and the South.Īs there are over a quarter of a billion people off-grid in North India, let us narrow this discussion on the North. In North India which hosts the majority of the off-grid households, the households are quite poor and the communities, though small and far apart, are quite dense. In South India, there are fewer off-grid communities, households have higher incomes, and communities are more sparsely populated. Demand for power, either through the grid or from private operators, varies by customer income which itself is linked to how remote the customer’s community is that demand for power and remoteness then impact the viability of the different approaches. The reason being, there is not one rural India. “National grid, mini grid, or micro grid: which is best suited for serving off-grid communities in rural India?”Īs much as I want to answer the question, the truth is the question cannot be answered not in that form at least. In an agent-based model, agents can pass information in arbitrarily complex webs of communication. In Conway’s Game of Life, information from other agents is restricted to just the neighboring eight cells. In an agent-based model, the state can be any data that describes the agent for instance, an agent that is used to represent a person could contain information about their age, height and salary. In Conway’s Game of Life, cells have a very simple state-they are either alive or dead. This means that agents themselves hold a state. In agent-based models, the agents are software entities, typically represented computationally as objects. How do ABMs work?Īgent-based modeling and simulation extends the foundational principles of Conway’s Game of Life. ![]() The simple ideas introduced by CA-stateful entities which update their states based on local information-underpin the much more advanced approach of agent-based modeling. The only way to generate them is to compute all the steps-a computational process called simulation. Interestingly, it’s impossible to know in advance what a starting configuration of the ‘Game of Life’ will generate the patterns produced are not arbitrary or predictable but are in fact undecidable. The complex patterns generated by the cells’ interactions are an example of “emergent” properties: properties of the whole system which do not belong to any of its parts. These simple rules generate complex patterns of movement for the system of cells which seemingly have a life of their own a life that is far removed from the simplicity of the four rules that govern the cells. The game proceeds iteratively-like a turn-based game-and at each turn every cell investigates the neighboring cells and updates according to the rules above.Įxtending the analogy to life, we can think of each turn as a generation of the population and the rules are applied repeatedly at each generation-you can see this in Figure 1.įigure 1: Conway’s Game of Life through time.

There are four numerical variables, or features, that are represented in this dataset. All that is required to access it is to refer to it by its name (“iris”). This dataset is available by default within R. In adherence with the style of the previous articles (box plot, line plot, etc), this article will use the Iris dataset. This article will cover all of them and leave the decision up to the reader. However, multi-variable plotting may often come in handy, especially during data point exploration. They should not have to frantically search for what is meant with the plot and what the plot is attempting to communicate. The audience’s eyes should fall naturally on the important messages being reported about the data. There should be only one or two main focus points in the graphic- even a 3d scatter plot can be too confusing, with too many axes to be able to understand axis labels, the linear regression line, or see the correlation coefficient. ![]() Good practice in data visualization is to keep the amount of information being communicated per plot to a minimum. Too much information is often worse than no information. However, as enticing, as this may seem to do, it is not often advised to plot too many variables on one plot. This allows you to map a trend line on the ggplot scatter plot, plotting a linear regression line and seeing the correlation coefficient of your data frame directly on the graph using a plot function. Like different color y values, shapes, sizes, and transparency can all be mapped to other variables, extending the range of variables visible at one glance in the plot. The different color of the points would thus represent a third categorical variable. For example, color may be added to the scatter plot. Now, by mapping the aesthetics of the points to other variables, the plot may be extended from a two-variable simple scatter plot to a multi-variable 3d scatterplot. The position value of the point on the x-axis represents one variable, while the value of the positions of the points on the y-axis represents the second variable. The data, or the values in the dataset, are displayed as points. Scatter plots are most commonly used to plot, or display, two variables of a given dataset. This will be explained more clearly in the following section on creating a scatterplot in R. The reason for this is that scatterplots are not limited to only two variables. Notice how the term “multi-variable” is used, as opposed to “two-variable”. Therefore, it is only natural for the transition from single-variable plots to multi-variable plots be made through scatterplots. The ggplot scatter plot is one of the most common of these plots. In fact, most linear model plots are actually used for plotting multiple variables. ![]() This article, however, will instead be concerned with plots that plot more than one variable. It is, therefore, a relatively simple plot and quite fitting to be used as an introduction to plots. One of the distinguishing characteristics of a histogram, as mentioned in the article, is that it plots only one variable. The tutorial went into detail explaining what a histogram is and how it is plotted using ggplot2. The article immediately preceding this one concerned the histogram. The tutorials have been delving into how to create different kinds of plots. The last couple articles have been concerned more with the data related side of ggplot2. This included themes, creating facets, and customizing legends, among other things. The first half of the series was primarily concerned with the aesthetics of the ggplot2 package. This article is a continuation of the ggplot2 series. ![]() It is possible you may encounter inaccuracies with map locations.
